Scuba Regulator Savvy by Pete Wolfinger: The Technician's Essential Guide

For years, "Regulator Savvy" has been the go-to manual for professional scuba regulator service technicians. Written by Pete Wolfinger, founder of Scuba Tools, this spiral-bound book offers a comprehensive understanding of how regulators function and how to properly maintain them.

This isn't just a step-by-step repair guide. "Regulator Savvy" takes a unique approach, divided into two key sections:

  • Understanding Function: The first half delves into the fundamental principles of how regulators work – the "why" behind their operation.
  • Practical Application: The second half applies this knowledge to the "art" of adjusting regulators for optimal performance, including testing procedures and troubleshooting tips – the "how."

With over 300 detailed illustrations across 180+ pages, the book makes complex mechanisms easier to visualize and understand. The text is written in a familiar style, using everyday language to explain technical concepts clearly.

While primarily aimed at new and experienced service technicians, "Regulator Savvy" is also incredibly valuable for any serious diver who wants a deeper understanding of how their life support equipment works. Its value is recognized within the industry, even being used by brands like Hog/Edge to help train their technicians!

Important Note from the Author: This manual provides foundational knowledge but is not a stand-alone do-it-yourself guide for regulator repair. Scuba regulators are life support equipment and should always be treated with the utmost respect and serviced by qualified individuals.

Deepen your understanding or elevate your professional skills – get your copy of Regulator Savvy today!

Great information filled book Covers all the information you wished you had with out taking a class. I would still say you want a service class but this fills in a lot of general information gaps

This is a great book! I've had a great time learning more about the sport I love. The author does a great job of explaining how all the the different kinds of regulators work. The diagrams are precise and clear, and follow a very logical sequence. I've read it twice and have enjoyed the read both times. It helps you understand the specific strengths, weaknesses, and other traits of different types of regulators. Shipping was fast and I was kept up to date at every step. The best online shopping experience I've ever had is with DRIS.

Scuba Regulator Savvy book, scuba regulator theory and operation manual.

I have not finished reading the book but it does a good job of explaining how and why and the different types of first and second stages work. The book talks about adjustment theory but does NOT get into specifics for any regulators.

When I placed order I was not emailed or called to tell me that 2 of the items were out of stock and not be back in stock for several days.

I emailed DRIS after several days and got a quick response that someone would be checking into the order. The next say I got an email saying that they were sorry for inconvenience and that they had dropped the ball by not keeping me informed about my order. I was told that the back ordered items would be in stock within 3 to 5 working days. The I was emailed that the order had shipped on the 5th day after the email from DRIS.

You've probably read the other reviews - and they're right; this is simply the book to have for regulators. Good illustrations of regulators that you'll probably recognize. I used it for a theory refresher and learned many things that I hand not considered. If you open a regulator, this is invaluable.

I like how this book provides the details. It starts out explaining basic concepts and then expands on that to show how it applies to a regulator. It keeps building on previous concepts allowing you to understand how/why things work and not just which way to turn the wrench.

I highly reccommend this book to anyone that wants to understand their regulators better.

This can walk a person who has no clue how a regulator-does-what-it-does through every step of it's function and give that person a working knowledge of regulators. The author uses a building block approach to explain concepts, starting with the basics and working up form there. As has been said before the illustrations are top notch and easy to follow and understand. I wish Pete Wolfinger (the author) wrote my collage textbooks.
Now if I could only get to a DRIS HOG regulator repair class.

This is a fantastic book. Well illustrated and easy to follow. This is a must read for anyone more advanced than the weekend openwater diver, and should be required reading for tech divers. Even if you don't intend to work on your regs this will help you better understand the equipment that keeps you alive underwater.

If you ever wanted to understand how your life support gear (well, mainly your regulator) works, this is the book for you. Breaks down the topics so that you start from the ground up and work your way into understanding how and why and what. The illustrations work perfectly and there's lots of examples as to what the theory is talking about. Very well written and highly recommended.

Excellent book. Great illustrations to boot! If you're remotely interested in servicing your regulators this book is a must. I showed this to a friend of mine and am ordering another copy for him to keep in his shop. DRIS experience a pleasure as always.
