I usually carry a knife
Review by
A lot of divers carry a dive knife and I'm one of them. I prefer it to shears. I know many divers prefer shears and mock divers with a knife, but I dive in the Northwest so 7mm gloves are the norm. That makes shears difficult to use, especially added with the adrenaline rush that comes with entanglement. Then I jumped on a plane and got on a cruise ship and found that my blunt tipped dive knife confiscated "for your (my) safety and security" along the way. Bottom line, shears will almost never be confiscated when traveling and cops in a strange land are unlikely to think you are about to go on a stabbing spree with them unlike a blunt tipped dive knife. The DRIS price is great and the stainless holds up to salt water. Good quality.

Better than a knife

Shears can cut through things better than a knife. It is also easy to use with just one hand. Some knives require two hands. It is also less likely to puncture your BCD.

strong cutter

This tool is so strong it can cut through many metals like coins. It is great. It is the most reliable cutting tool.

Shears are strong

Shears are some of the strongest cutting devices. You can cut through metal with these. They are my go to cutting device. As long as you aren't cutting something that needs to be sawed instead, these will do the job.

Good quality

I bought this mainly for the sheath. It is high quality. If you do not need a sheath, you can purchase a cheap EMT shears for a few bucks, but I wanted and needed a sheath to make sure it doesn't cut a hole in my BCD pocket accidentally. The shears are good quality, but I am not sure how long they will last since it is not rust proof.

decent for the price
Review by
These shears are deffenetly low cost which is nice, but the quaility is pretty cheap too. The handles a think cheap plastic, and the metal warps if you try to cut anything thick like a rope. I would probably spend the money and buy a better quaility next time.

Decent shears, but not streamlined
Review by
I have mixed feelings about these shears. On one hand, shears are much better than the daggers most divers equip themselves with. The belt loop is nice, and the flap over the front of the shears could even prevent something from snagging on the finger loops.

However, the clip at the top is completely unnecessary. The first thing I did was remove the plastic clip.

Once that is taken care of, you get a nice set of shears that will serve you better than most knives.

Rusted after first use....
Review by
These look like standard EMS shears that you can buy much cheaper at other places. I thought they were "special shears" for diving because they were stainless steel. However, mine rusted after my first salt water dive. The sheath is functional, but as others have mentioned, the plastic clip is useless unless you want your shears dangling below you.

I would recommend that you look elsewhere for shears. Buy some cheap EMT shears (or get them free if you have a buddy that's a paramedic or firefighter) and accept that they will rust and be a semi-disposabe item.

Good shears, slightly cluttered
Review by
The advantages of using shears have been covered by numerous other reviews. One thing that is odd about this setup is the clip up top sort of breaks the streamlined setup. The belt loop is nice, but the clip up top could be removed for a cleaner setup.

Ultimately, they are a good tool. The cover over the front of the handles is nice, and seems like it could keep things more contained and prevent entanglements.

Shears like these are in my opinion much more useful than a knife in almost every situation; they are much better at cutting fishing line, rope, kelp, etc and pose much less risk of cutting a nice new drysuit or popping a bcd bladder. Plus, if you lose them, you are only out 15 bucks unlike most dive knives.
