ERDI Contaminated Water Diver OPS & Technician Course: Safety in Hazardous Environments
Public safety diving often involves entering challenging environments. The ERDI Contaminated Water Operations Component provides essential training for divers operating in potentially contaminated water sources like rivers, ponds, or lakes, especially where hazards like vehicles, remains, or disturbed bottoms might be present. This course equips divers with the knowledge and procedures to manage these high-risk situations safely.
This demanding program teaches you to:
- Understand Contamination: Learn about the four generally accepted classifications of contaminated water and the associated risks.
- Prepare for Entry: Master the procedures for preparing yourself and your gear before entering contaminated water.
- Select and Maintain PPE: Understand how to choose, use, clean, store, and maintain appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Expect to spend significant time practicing in full PPE.
- Execute Decontamination: Learn and practice proper post-dive decontamination procedures for yourself and your equipment.
- Recognize and Handle Hazards: Develop skills in identifying potential hazards specific to contaminated water environments.
- Assess Risk: Gain tools for environmental risk assessment to ensure safer operations.
The course includes one confined water session and two open water dives (minimum 30 minutes bottom time each), plus extensive post-dive decontamination exercises. A high level of awareness and proficiency in skills is required.
Note: Use of specialized equipment like Full Face Masks or Surface Supplied Air systems requires additional, separate training.
