Overall Rating
Viking Protech Drysuit (back zip)
Review by
I own the Viking Pro 1000, and the Viking Protech (back zip model). The Protech offers the same fit and protection as the viking pro 1000, with the following key differences: 1) the boots. The Protech has fitted 5mm neoprene boots, compared to the "over boot" which is on the Pro. I have found that I only need to wear socks to be comfortable on the Protech. the Pro, I need a more sturdy boot insert to provide some walking comfort. The Protech boot fits a smaller fin (with my foot size) than the similarly sized Pro. (I wear size 4W with both suits). 2) material. The Protech suit material is much more flexible..it stretches, 4-way. It has a lycra fabric backing. The suit actually fits more athletically than the Pro--and it's comfortable! No problem bending the legs to put fins on. No binding, or tightness. 3) Zipper. the protech offers a front zip version, but I have the back zip version, same as the Pro. Zipper works fine, keep that zipper waxed to ensure smooth movement. 4) drying the suit after use. The suit needs to be turned inside out to dry it out from any sweat (on a hot dive day), and the boots should be air dried (hang the suit on a dry-air suit dryer, that will work fine). The Protech's material is heavier than the Pro (1250 g/m2 versus 1050 g/m2) so it seems that the Protech offers more resistance from punctures or cuts. Am happy with both suits, the Protech will be my "workhorse" suit for demanding search and recovery work.
