Ready to move beyond dive guiding and start developing your instructional skills? The SDI Assistant Instructor Course builds directly on your SDI Divemaster foundation, providing practical teaching experience and preparing you for the next step: becoming an SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Instructor.

Working closely with an experienced SDI Instructor, you'll learn the fundamentals of dive education, including:

  • Lesson Planning & Presentation: Develop skills in preparing lesson plans and delivering academic presentations.
  • In-Water Teaching: Gain hands-on experience assisting with the training of divers in both confined and open water settings.
  • Problem Solving: Refine your ability to manage common issues in a training environment.
  • SDI Standards & Procedures: Gain a thorough understanding of SDI's training philosophy, procedures, risk management, and instructor responsibilities.

This course also requires demonstrating dive skills to instructor quality and meeting specific watermanship standards (including timed swims and rescues).

Who should take this course?

  • Certified SDI Divemasters (or equivalent) seeking practical teaching experience.
  • Divemasters preparing to become SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Instructors.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age 18
  • Certified SDI Divemaster (or equivalent from a recognized agency)
  • Proof of current CPR, First Aid, and Oxygen Provider certifications*
  • Proof of at least 60 logged dives OR 50 logged dives with 25+ hours underwater time
  • Possess minimum required instructional equipment (as outlined in SDI standards) 

*Note: CPR, First Aid, and O2 provider courses may be combined with the instructor program by qualified instructors.

What You Can Do as an SDI Assistant Instructor:

  • Upon successful completion, you gain valuable teaching capabilities:
  • Teach and certify students in the SDI Snorkeling Course.
  • Conduct the SDI Inactive Diver/Refresher Course.
  • Conduct the knowledge quest review portion of the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course under instructor guidance.
  • Assist active SDI Instructors during approved diving courses.
  • Supervise and conduct dives for certified divers.
  • Teach approved SDI specialties after completing specific Specialty Instructor training.

Course Fee Includes: Tuition and SDI Assistant Instructor application fees.

Not Included: Required course materials, personal dive gear, potential dive site/boat fees.
